The Domar
The Domar (marked as “Đ”) was the basic monetary unit of the world before the holocaust. It is a small lightweight (5-gram) card with colors and symbols denoting various denominations, and nearly indestructible. Since the nature of the Domar makes it impossible to counterfeit, it is still used widely as a means of exchange.
However, since it is possible that the ruins of an ancient bank may be found in the wilderness, there is the possibility of “new” Domars being released into the economy of a settlement by adventurers. Because this new influx could destroy the value of a settlement’s trade goods, merchants will prefer gold, other precious metals, and gemstones for large purchases.
Merchants will be suspicious of strangers with large quantities of Domars, but a sack of gold always talks their language. One “gold piece” (a piece of gold weighing one ounce) is usually equal in trading value to 5 Domars, but a large influx of Domars in an area will increase the relative value of gold pieces. The old world Credit Cards are often mixed in with Domars by mistake, and when this happens they are simply treated as 1Đ. Denominations come in 1Đ, 5Đ, 10Đ, 20Đ,50Đ, 100Đ and 500Đ value.
The Tab
The Tab (marked as “Ŧ”) came about well after the apocalypse. Some items were worth less than a Domar to merchants, but since the smallest denomination is 1Đ some resolution had to be made. Thus, the Tab was introduced.
Little is known about these odd pieces of metal, but they can be found readily pretty much anywhere. When the system was first introduced, unusually colored Tabs were considered to be worth more than the simple silver-colored ones. However, over time the color gets scraped off to the point they look like the common Tabs.
Now, however, the price fluctuations have settled down. The going exchange rate is 100Ŧ for 1Đ. Unlike the Domar, Tabs are easily destroyed. However, due to their common nature and value there is no real reason to counterfeit them.
